There is word today that Nokia has applied for a US patent for a lightning detector system to be used on their mobile phones. Although a seemingly unnecessary extra feature, it may prove helpful - if not life saving - for someone who spends a lot of time outdoors. The system detects radio waves created by lightning using FM radio and GSM receivers. There's no official word from Nokia yet, but the patent is available to the public here.
